Will Beightol has resided directly across the street from Double Canyon since childhood, so he understands the climate and eccentricities of the land better than anyone. Will learned about agriculture as a teen, driving a tractor for local vegetable farms, many of which are still located near Horse Heave Hills’ most prized vineyards, including Champoux, Phinny Hill and Double Canyon. After attending Washington State University, Will graduated with a degree in business and a minor in horticulture.
After a decade of managing Hogue Ranches, Will learned in 2007 that Crimson Wine Group had purchased the Double Canyon property. As a native with in-depth knowledge of the land, Will was hired to manage the newly established estate. He single-handedly planted the vines using a high-density technique that produces less fruit per plant, a critical step in cultivating fruit with expressive, complex character. As General Manager, Will is responsible for day-to-day operations at the estate, but it’s his devotion to the vines you’ll see reflected in the exceptionally high quality fruit he produces each vintage.
“What I love most about the vineyards,” says Will, “is that the end product reflects the choices you’ve made—not just last year but over many years. There’s an excitement to living with the ambiguity of a vintage and the choices you make in response to it.”
