2014 Double Canyon Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon
Horse Heaven Hills
This Cabernet Sauvignon reflect the warm vintage and restricted crop with rich, ripe flavors, great concentration and excellent density. Deep ruby in the glass, this wine opens with black cherry and lifted sweet caramel on the nose. The palate is plush with elegant integrated tannins and balanced acidity. The flavors are reminiscent of tart cherry, cassis, plum and spice – a characteristic quality from our estate fruit.
Established in 2007, Double Canyon Vineyard resides in the heart of the award-winning Horse Heaven Hills. This appellation is a historic source for many wineries, but Double Canyon is one of few estate properties located in this corner of Washington State. Named for two ravines that run through the property, Double Canyon produces estate-grown wines that express the individuality of our vineyard in this distinctive windswept, desert appellation.
Our 2014 Double Canyon Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon comes entierly from our own estate vineyard. All of the lots were hand harvested, with small lots hand punched down. After dryness was acheived with pressing, the wine was barrel aged for 18 months using 40% new French oak.
2014 proved to be hotter than most Washington growing years. In fact, it passed 1992 as the warmest year on record. The growing year started with a cold snap at the end of February that quickly gave way to a warm spring, leading to an early bud break and bloom. An early bud break is beneficial because it allows more flexibility around the timing of harvest. We began to pick Cabernet in the Horse Heaven Hills at the very end of September and continued through October. The early cold weather along with some warm wind events led to a lighter than normal crop load on the vines; this ultimately resulted in the expression of exceptional quality in the glass.
